Abstract

Accessibility and inclusion in tourism emerge as crucial themes for contemporary society, seeking to promote the full and equal participation of all people, regardless of their abilities. Accessibility in tourism involves the elimination of architectural, communicational, and attitudinal barriers that may limit the access of people with special needs to services and tourist sites. The article is based on an updated literature review on accessibility and tourism, highlighting significant gaps between the traditional tourist offer and the realities faced by visitors with special needs. The implementation of accessible and inclusive practices in tourism has significant impacts. In social terms, a fairer and more equitable society is created, where participation opportunities are extended to all. In economic terms, the expansion of accessible tourism increases the flow of visitors, generating jobs and promoting local development. Accessible and inclusive tourist destinations can attract a more diverse and wide audience, expanding the potential market. The role of public policies is fundamental to encourage and regulate accessibility and inclusion in tourism, creating and implementing guidelines to guide the private sector, public, NGOs and local community. At the same time, collaboration between different actors, such as tourist companies, non-governmental organizations, HEIs and research centres, is essential to develop projects that drive the continuous improvement of accessibility and inclusion. Accessibility and inclusion in tourism are essential premises for building a more just and egalitarian society. By removing physical and social barriers, and promoting the appreciation of diversity, tourist destinations can become more welcoming and enriching for all their visitors. Investing in accessible and inclusive practices benefits individuals with special needs and strengthens the tourism sector, creating opportunities for sustainable growth and human development.
